« back to classes page
Director Frank Capra won three Academy awards and is perhaps the most famous for It's a Wonderful Life. In the 1930s and early 1940s,
he made several comedies with populist themes-decent people from humble origins acheiving wealth, fame, or political success.  The course will offer Mr. Deeds Goes to Town with Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with James Stewart and Jean Arthur and Meet John Doe with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.  Differences between populism at theat time and what is considered populism today will be discussed.
